Dick Pieper is internationally recognized as a horseman’s horseman and this iconic individual has influenced and developed the careers of riders and trainers for decades. After fifty plus years in the horse industry, his name has come to stand for a special brand of arena excellence that never compromised the welfare of the horse.
Pieper’s résumé in the performance horse industry is extensive. He is a Past President of the National Reining Horse Association, NRHA Futurity Champion and member of the NRHA Hall of Fame. He is an American Quarter Horse Association Professional Horseman and multiple World Champion and the list of horses that came from his program and went on to greatness has been well documents.
When he applied his reining techniques and expertise to the cutting industry he had incredible success training horses to exceptional performance levels. And even though he made the switch to cutting later in life, he has won or made the finals at major National Cutting Horse Association events.
Over the years his insight into equine potential helped create a thoughtful breeding program that melded form-to-function conformation with the very top level of athletic ability. His patriarch stallion, Playgun, exhibited just those qualities and was able to successfully pass them on to his progeny.
Dick has been an approved judge in the NRHA, AQHA, NCHA, and the National Reined Cow Horse Association. He has judged some of the most elite shows in the performance horse industry, including the All-American Quarter Horse Congress, AQHA World Show, AQHA Youth World Show, and the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity. He currently serves on the board of directors for both the Ranch Horse Association of America and the American Stock Horse Association.
Pieper’s success as a trainer and competitor is legendary, but perhaps his biggest skill is his ability to communicate with people. His common-sense approach and his empathy for his equine partners resonates with riders of all skill levels. After his extensive career in the performance world, Dick now shares his wisdom and training techniques in a book, a series of training videos and clinics known as The Language of Horsemanship.
