Clinton Anderson, Horse Digest Archive

One of the things I enjoy doing is going back through my old issues of Horse Digest. There is nothing like the feel of a magazine in my hands and thumbing through the pages of advertisements and articles. If you are like me, a particular training article will stand out to you because you might be facing a certain issue or challenge with your horse at that time. That is why we hang on to our favorite magazines, so we can pull out a past issue and refer back to an article that will help us as we continue our relationship with our horse.

Recently we introduced a new horse into our herd. He is young, eager, curious, and not afraid. Good qualities yes, but because he is all those things, he tends to get in our personal space. This is a habit we wanted to break him of right away.

Clinton Anderson

In the last issue of Horse Digest, Clinton Anderson wrote about, “Mouthy Horses”. Horses that nibble on shirt sleeves, lead ropes, etc. These horse can develop bad habits later on, like biting. Clinton explained that horses need stimulation to be happy and content. Just like a kid, (my mind couldn’t help but compare this to my adorable yet rambunctious, 2 year old grandson) your horse needs a job (or activity) to keep his mind busy. (Just like my grandson who has to constantly touch or put his feet on everything and everybody.)

Clinton goes on to explain how to keep a horse out of your personal hula hoop space – a 4 foot circle that surrounds you and some exercises to keep him busy.

To learn what those exercises are, check out page 26 in the May issue of Horse Digest. It is a great article with practical tips that anyone can implement into their horses training routine.

If you don’t save all your issues (like those of us who like to hold a magazine in our hands) – go to our website at www.www.horsedigests.com and click on our electronic magazine.
